New Career Opportunities in the Development and Application of Laser-Plasma Accelerators

Several senior and junior permanent academic appointments are being made in Scotland for the Scottish Centre for the Application of Plasma-based Accelerators (SCAPA), which is part of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA) pooling effort.

The focus of these new appointments will be on the development and application of next generation accelerators such as the laser-plasma accelerator.

The appointments are connected with the new SCAPA centre of excellence, which will comprise a 1000 square metre laboratory, 5 new beam lines (experimental areas), laser-driven accelerators and radiation sources, and a 200-300 TW Ti:sapphire laser. The SCAPA facilities will be completed by the end of 2013.

The senior appointments include

  • 2 new Chairs at Strathclyde in the development and application of laser-driven accelerators and their applications, which include medical, industrial, energy and security applications. Both experimental and theoretical applicants are welcomed.
  • 1 Reader and 1 Lectureship vacancy at the University of the West of Scotland, in Nuclear Physics and its applications.
  • 1 Readership vacancy at the University of Glasgow in Nuclear Physics and its applications.

This is a very exciting career opportunity to take a leading role in a unique initiative to develop and exploit laser-plasma accelerators. There will be an opportunity to collaborate with a team of about 40 academics, researchers and students working in this area across the participating universities.

Please see www.scapa.ac.uk for more details. The closing date is the 21st of October but we are happy to consider late applicants.

If you would like to discuss the opportunities please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes
Dino Jaroszynski
